Faculty of Agriculture - Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University

A Legacy of Excellence in Agricultural Education and Innovation

Since its establishment in 2006, the Faculty of Agriculture has emerged as a distinguished center of agricultural education, research, and innovation in Nigeria. With a steadfast commitment to producing quality graduates who can address the nation's food security challenges and contribute to economic development, the faculty has built an impressive legacy of academic excellence and practical training.

The faculty's journey of growth and innovation began under the visionary leadership of its founding Dean, Professor Edward C. Orji, who laid a solid foundation for future development. This foundation was strengthened by successive Deans, including Prof. E.I.C. Nnabuife, Dr. C.O. Uzuegbunam, and Prof. A.O. Aniebo. Currently, under the dynamic leadership of Prof. C.O.A. Ugwumba, who has served as Dean since 2020, the faculty has experienced renewed vigor and focus, positioning itself as a leader in agricultural education in the region.

The Faculty of Agriculture offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs through its six specialized departments: Agricultural Economics and Extension, Animal Science, Crop Science and Horticulture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Food Science and Technology, and Soil Science. These programs are designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to excel in the agricultural sector upon graduation.

The faculty's commitment to practical training is exemplified by its state-of-the-art facilities and research initiatives. Notable achievements include the establishment of a 0.4-hectare special plantain and banana plantation, the development of hybrid local cattle (muturu) for research and income generation, and the occupation of an ultramodern annexed faculty building complex. In January 2022, the faculty achieved full accreditation for two of its departments—Food Science & Technology and Fisheries & Aquaculture—at the first attempt, a testament to its dedication to maintaining the highest academic standards.

Research and innovation remain at the core of the faculty's mission. In October 2024, the faculty successfully organized its 3rd International Agricultural Conference, bringing together experts, researchers, and students from around the world to explore innovative solutions to pressing agricultural challenges. This commitment to advancing agricultural knowledge is complemented by the faculty's ambitious plans for commercialization of agricultural products, including rice, plantain, banana, poultry, fish, and livestock products, which will contribute to food security and economic development.

The Faculty of Agriculture is uniquely positioned to address the agricultural challenges of the 21st century. Located in the heart of Anambra State, the faculty serves as a vital resource for the agricultural community, providing research-based solutions and training the next generation of agricultural leaders. Through its blend of rigorous academic programs, practical training opportunities, and innovative research, the faculty continues to fulfill its mission of reducing unemployment through self-employment and job creation.

As agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria's economy, the Faculty of Agriculture stands ready to meet the challenges of the future. With its rich history of achievement, dedicated faculty, and ambitious vision, the faculty continues to shape the future of agriculture in Nigeria and beyond, producing graduates who will lead with integrity, innovate with purpose, and serve with
