Department Overview

Milestones and Achievements

Creation of Commercial Fish Farm: The establishment of a commercial fish farm has been pivotal. It serves as a practical training ground for students, a research facility, and a source of income for the department.
Construction of Hatchery: The department boasts a state-of-the-art hatchery for artificial fish breeding and propagation. This facility is crucial for teaching, research, and increasing fish production.

Water Quality Analysis Laboratory: A fully equipped laboratory for analyzing water quality has been set up. This lab ensures that the water used in fish culture is of the highest quality, facilitating both research and practical learning.
Collaborations: The department has established collaborations with various local and international institutions, enhancing the quality of lectures and research opportunities.

Entrepreneurship: Fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship, enabling graduates to start their own businesses in fish feed production, fingerling production, and other agricultural sectors.

Mission & Vision

Mission
The mission of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is to produce high-level manpower competent in both theory and practice. The department aims to address sustainable development issues related to fisheries and aquaculture, manage the fin-fish and shellfish resources of Nigeria’s water bodies, and produce graduates with high entrepreneurial capacities. These graduates will be equipped to achieve self-actualization in employment and contribute to the country’s animal protein needs through improved breeding stocks, efficient feed resources, and sustainable husbandry of fish and other aquatic animals.
Vision
The undergraduate program is designed to be broad-based, providing practical and functional training in various areas of agriculture, with a focus on fisheries and aquaculture. The department’s philosophy aligns with the university’s overarching goal of “restoring the dignity of man.” This is achieved through rigorous academic programs that combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students to face challenges in self-reliance and contribute meaningfully to national and societal development.
